Feeding your chickens egg shells: Why and how
Eggshells have so many uses. They are great for the garden and plants and can be used for art just to name a few. Here at Coopers Flock Farm, we find the best use is to feed them back to the chickens! WHAAAAT?
That eggshell is a solid piece of calcium. Chickens need calcium to produce strong eggshells for their eggs. Instead of buying oyster shells, eggshells can give those hens the calcium they need!
Here is how its done..
I save up shells in a baggie and keep them in the freezer. When I have quite a few, I take 10 minutes to bake them.
Preheat the oven to 300 F. Lay the eggshells on parchment paper or a silicone mat (ahhh...someday I will have one. Or at least I keep telling myself that, but I digress)
Bake for 5-10 minutes until dried out.
Let those warm bacteria free eggshells cool down for a little bit.
Break them into small pieces and fed to your hens.
Boom! Calcium on a budget and using every part of the egg!!
What other uses have you found for your eggshells? What are your favorites? Comment below, I can't wait to here!!
